I feel weak. I feel shame. But I have seen the light, and this post is meant as a bit of catharsis. Forgive me.
My life was changed in 2002 (and although I may have been ahead of the curve, I'm not the only one). In the summer of 2002 I did a bit of a 'I just finished my first year as a PhD student grant tour of Europe' summer vacation. I had 10 days in London, about the same in Bonn/Koln, and then another 10 days in Dublin. It was wonderful. I walked all over the place and listened to my discman (yes discman!) nearly nonstop for a month. I had brought 12 CDs with me, and I listened those so much that I likely haven't listened to them much in the subsequent thirteen years.
And then my life changed in 2002 when I dropped $400--a rather sizeable sum for a starving graduate student--on a first generation 20 gig iPod. Quite suddenly, I didn't need to buy batteries (yeah!) and I had access to every CD I owned in my back pocket. It changed my life. I have had an iPod nonstop since September 2002.
But iPod headphones suck, and they are uncomfortable, and I'm generally in search of better options. I usually have a two set rotation. A pair of in-ear buds (for use at night and while exercising) and then some over-ear cans (for use when walking to school, traveling, and for the moments when I want good sound). Excessive? Perhaps. But I'm an excessive kind of chap.
A couple of years ago, all set to make another trans-Atlantic flight, I was in the market for some good noise canceling headphones. I eventually settled on some Sennheiser 450s (the list price on Amazon is $450, selling price is $350, and my invoice was $250; I may have used a gift card or some such nonsense). They are really good headphones; comfortable and the sound quality is great, and the noise canceling is very good. But they are huge and aren't that loud (I purchased a headphone amp, but that's a pain). They are great travel headphones, but when I got back from Poland, I wanted to buy a pair of everyday over-ear headphones.
Budget? $300. Excessive? Perhaps. But I'm an excessive kind of chap.
After a little bit of research, I decided to purchase a pair of Beats by Dre Studio headphones. I did so for a couple of reasons. First (and to be honest), they are just damn beautiful. Second, the newer models had a rechargeable battery for the noise canceling feature (I refuse to purchase batteries for the sake of using headphones). And finally, as a nerdy college professor who wants so desperately for my students to think I'm cool, I knew these would give me instant street cred.
Okay...the the last reason may not be true, but the first two certainly are. Please note that I've mentioned nothing about how they sound. The reason? Most of my research indicated that they don't sound great, although they certainly have a "Sound Really Great" price tag. Seemingly, I didn't care. They were pretty to look at, they had active noise canceling with a rechargeable battery, and they were cool. SIGN ME UP, BEATS! Take my $300, please.
To be fair, they sounded okay. A bit more bass than I need given that I mostly listen to podcasts and now non-rap music, and the high tones were not as bright as they should have been. After a few months, I was sufficiently annoyed and thought that it was high time to try again. I became determined to sell the Beats to a lucky soul (worth $300? Nope! Worth $200? You betcha!). So it was time to do some more headphone research, and this time I planned to focus on something other than 1) how cool they looked and 2) how cool people would assume I am on the basis on my ability to spend $300 on a pair of headphones.
I did research. Lots of it. And when it was again time to pull the trigger, there was a pretty clear winner: The V-Moda M-100s. On the aesthetic end, they urban, made of steel (re: durable) and thoughtfully designed (small details; you can change the side the headphone wire plugs into, the cables are reinforced with Kevlar and are replaceable, the headphones collapse into a small ball, the shields on the sides can be personalized, lightweight). The black pair I purchased are stylish enough, but they don't scream "Look at me!" quite like the all red Beats did. I'm okay with. I'm a 38 year old college professor, dammit.
But as nice as they look--and they're good!--where these things most shine is when they are over your ears and you are actually listening to music. To be fair, they are not nearly as bass heavy as the Beats were--and this may be disagreeable to those who are, say, 20 years younger than me--I found the low end more than adequate for the music I listen to and the volume at which I listen to it. The mids and high are as crisp as anything I've ever heard, and have been times over the past two weeks when I've heard a song I've listened to a thousand times, and I've thought, "Sweet heavens; this sounds like a new song! I never hear *that* bit before!" Yesterday while watering the lawn I heard "Hey Jude." Seemed like a new song. I can write it no other way; listening to the V-Moda M-100s is simply joyful. If they last as long as I suspect they will, I will be a happy chap for some time to come.
My only gripe so far? As the headphones have an input on each side, there is a small plug you can insert to the side not in use. I generally use the left side so that I can reach across with my right hand to use the inline remote. But recently, I wanted to change it to the right side so that I could plug the headphones into my iPad while I was grading paper, and the iPad was to my right. When trying to remove the plug it sprung from my fingertips and went directly down the air duct in my house. Lost forever. Assuming nothing gets in the now open hole, I'll have no worries.
I don't have any particular artistic ability, but I do work in an art department with a variety of talented art makers, including a Graphic Design professor, who just may hook me up with a BZ logo. From there, I can have that logo etched into the shields. Small bit of personalization, but a pretty nifty one, too.
When a PhD student at the University of Maryland there was a car often parked in Lot One that had a spoiler on the back fashioned out of cardboard with a sign prominently displayed in the back window: My Car Makes Me Cool. I love it.
The V-Moda headphones may not make you as cool as the Beats will, I suppose, but I can write this with complete and total clarity: they will sound much, much better. And at the end of the day, that's why we should buy headphones.
PACKAGING:
Both come in great packages, but the Senn's are a step above. Some of it is due to the enormous size of the box, but also the way it opens, the welcome materials set it apart. It feels like an Apple designed box. The V-Modas were a little hard to get into.
Winner:Sennheiser
CASE:
The V-MODA case is contoured/sculpted, while the Senn is smooth. The Senn has a classic look to it, while the V-MODA is more modern/sci fi, think Casablanca vs 2001: A Space Odyssey. The interior of the Senn case is molded to hold the headphones, while the V-MODA does not have a molded fit, yet still secures the phones. The velcro cover for the Senn case is a bit easier to use then the V-MODA's V-Strap system. However, the Senn case is LARGE. When you put them side-by-side, the Senn seems to be laughing at the diminutive stature of the V-MODA. If you travel AT ALL, the Senns are going to be a pain. The V-MODA case is nice and compact. The V case also comes with a carabiner for you to clip the case. The Senn case has a strap for a carabiner if you want to add your own, but it doesn't seem as sturdy as the V's carabiner loop strap/
Winner: V-MODA
HEADPHONE LOOKS & CONSTRUCTION:
I love the classic 40's look of the Sennheisers. I got the ivory ones and they would easily work as a prop for a WWII bomber pilot. Again, just like the case, the V-MODA's would be at home in any sic-fi movie. From the pictures, I was skeptical about the V-MODAs, I thought they looked cheap. When you see them in real life, you can tell that isn't the case. The V's are quality cans. They are mostly metal and leather (or leatherette in the case of the ear cups). The folding hinges are top-notch and will most likely last an eternity. Likewise the Senns are their usual quality. I've had my cheaper, plastic 438's for 3 years and they still look brand new, so I'm sure the Momentum's will hold up just as well.
Winner: Toss-up (I prefer the Sennheiser classic look, but that is personal, both are great looking in their own right)
CABLES: The Momentum's have the usual Sennheiser 2.5mm proprietary plug, with the thin, rubbery cable. From previous experience, these get tangled fairly easily. The V-MODA has a thicker, kevlar reinforced cable with a standard 3.5mm cable. I haven't had time to judge how this will hold up, but it seems that it would be better than the Senn cable. I do wish the V-MODA's came with a plain cable, one cable has phone controls, the other has the Y-connector to share the signal with a friend. I just would like a short, plain cable. The V cables also have a 45 degree connector on the output end, this will help reduce stress..
Winner: V-MODA
COMFORT:
Now we come to the headphones themselves. The Sennheisers are comfortable. Most people talk about the ear cups being too small. I have an average head (7-3/8 New Era) and average ears. The cups were slightly small, but a little adjusting and my ears settled in nicely. The Senns use leather for the cups, so I'm sure after a while, they will fit even better. However, if you have large ears, the Senns will be a problem. Likewise, the V-MODAs will also be an issue out of the box, you'll prob have to order the XL ear cups. The V-MODA uses synthetic leather for the ear cups and real leather for the top head band. Weight-wise, the VMODAs weigh a bit more, and you can tell. This is most likely due to them having more metal in them verses the Sennheisers. The V-MODAs also clamp more tightly, out of the box. I've had to adjust them by spreading them to lessen the pressure. They are still a little tight, but are breaking in.The Senns felt comfortable the second I put them on. However, the sliding adjustment on the Senns seems like it would eventually start to slip on its own, whereas the V-MODA has the traditional 'click' adjustments.
Winner: Sennheiser
SOUND:
Again, everything you read is true. The Sennheiser's sound perfectly balanced, nice response through the mids with tempered bass. The V-MODA's being for DJ's are more dynamic, slightly heavier on the bass, with diminished mids. Really, there's not much more to be said than what has been written about both of them. I'm not a true audiophile, I would say that I'm an serious audio hobbyist, I can pick out more than the average person, but not a die hard audio nut. I can hear the slight difference between the two, but not so much so that it just jumps out at me as a drastic difference between the two. Most of the music I listen to is alternative, electronic or ambient, so midrange isn't terribly important. Both of them are an upgrade from my Sennheiser HD438's and will be an upgrade from the Beats line (any of them, they are all marketing fluff).
Winner: Toss up (again, based on personal preference. I personally prefer the sound of the Momentums)
So, which is my favorite? Overall, the V-MODA M100's will be the ones I end up keeping, think I will send the Momentums back. If I was just using these at one location, I would probably keep the Momentums. I like the looks and the balanced sound. However, I take my ear phones with me a lot. Into coffee shops, back and forth between home and office, travel, etc. I don't feel like carrying around the extra bag that the Sennheiser's come in. These two sets of headphones are so evenly matched, that you can't go wrong on either one. It all comes down to what you use the headphones for and how much they will travel with you.
-----------------------UPDATE: 05/01/14-----------------------------------
After a couple of months with the V-MODAs, I'm so glad I stuck with them. They've broken in nicely. So comfortable and sound great. I'm looking for opportunities to plug them in now. I listened to a couple of songs off of Pearl Jam's "Ten" (256VBR AAC iTunes Match file) and heard things I'd never had. Still have yet to plug into my vinyl collection with these, I can only assume they will be wonderful. The portability is awesome. I have the case clipped to my backpack and it's never in the way. I have the white ones and the case has it's share of scuffs and scratches, I don't mind, it looks great with the wear and tear. If you get the V-MODA's, you will love every second with them.

Considering they are Bass headphones they sound very clean and I would recommend them if you don't want overly exaggerated Bass
You need to buy the XL pads as they are terrible without them..
Sound isolation is decent but I wouldn't expect anything crazy.
Would not recommend these headphones without a headphone amplifier personally and would return them if I didn't have one.
**** I wouldn't suggest anyone spends over £100 on headphones without spending about £100-£200 on an amp anyway *****
GAMERS READ, IF YOU USE A DAC/AMP WITH THESE YOU CAN'T USE THE BOOM MIC WITH YOUR DAC.. YOU WOULD NEED TO BUY THE MOD MIC OR A SEPARATE MIC IN GENERAL SO BEWARE..
LONG REVIEW FOR ANYONE INTERESTED -
I wouldn't class myself as an audiophile but audio quality is very important to me... Also, I ordered the XL pads before I even got the headphone and you really do need them, very uncomfortable headphones with stock pads..
I've used the FIIO E7 + E9 DAC and amp combo with my AKG K702 open back headphones for several years now and I really enjoy them. The problem with the K702's is they leak A LOT of noise into the room (i literally put them on the table and use them as mini speakers sometimes) and they need really high end headphone amps (i know my FIIO is not high end).
Also, many people would feel they lack bass because they are designed to have a flat frequency response and to not alter the sound to be more pleasurable for a human ear to hear. As I used to produce music and couldn't have monitor speakers I really needed that in a headphone and they really do deliver on that front.
I decided that I wanted a 2nd pair of headphones specifically for a stronger hitting bass without going OTT and maintaining a clean and controlled sound at the same time and I found the V-Moda M-100's.
Firstly, I listened to these headphones directly from a Samsung S7 and then a Laptop and I wasn't impressed at all and even my GF who bought them for me for xmas could see I was disappointed (to the point were I would of returned them and got a £100 pound pair instead).
However, I plugged them into my FIIO e7 + e9 combo and they sounded MUCH better. I turned up the volume to 85% and I could literally feel the bass vibrating the XL Pads and the whole sound just came alive (also, the max volume is MUCH higher with an amp)..
The best part is they still maintained a very clean and controlled Bass whilst providing the exact umpf I was looking for in a second set of headphones.
